There would be no inherent conflict between science and religion if religion were recognized to be purely a system of metaphors, on the same level as the stories of Santa Claus and Superman. There is nothing wrong with being enthused and inspired by Superman comics, but if an afficionado were to start believing that Superman really existed, and were to act and depend on that belief, it would rapidly create serious problems for him and perhaps for others. Similarly, when people start believing that the pronouncements of religious mythology have some validity in describing the real world, they are dragging that mythology into the domain of science, and succumbing to delusion.
